To touch upon our Science currciulum our class is learning about animals. Environments they live in, what animals do in the Winter -hibernate, migrate, or adapt and how they use their senses. We enjoyed learning about different types of bears and Arctic animals. They really were interested in the caves so...just so you know they may ask you about going to the Polar Caves! :) Hibernation is a deep sleep that helps them to save energy and survive the winter without eating much. During hibernation the animal's body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and its breathing slow down so that it does not use much energy. Animals hibernate to survive the winter season, when the weather is cold and food is scarce. To prepare, animals might search for, eat, and/or store extra food in the fall. Migration is when animals move on a regular cycle. For example, caribou in the Arctic go south in winter and return in summer when it is warmer. Many birds migrate, such as geese and storks. Migrating animals generally go back and forth between summer and winter homes. Even people migrate during the Winter. Migration is called a long journey to a new home. Did you know that animals camouflage themselves so they can adapt to their environment? Adaptation can protect animals from predators or from harsh weather. Many birds can hide in the tall grass and weeds and insects can change their color to blend into the surroundings. Examples of adaptations are fur, feather and fat (to help animals keep warm in cold habitats), long legs (to help animals escape from their predators) or camouflage (to help animals hide from their predators). People adapt in the Winter by ? You guessed it ...putting on a Winter coat, hat, gloves etc....
We used our fine motor skills to make several different bears
We challenged ourselves to walk like a bear
Matched animals to their environments
Looked at animal skeltons
Took care of animals in vet center
Voted on our favorite bear
Made a class book based on Eric Carle's book Panda Bear, Panda Bear What do you see?
